Sustainable living: all-electric flats at Shannon
The Special Collections and Archives Department at UL holds the photographic archive of Shannon Development, numbering some 250,000 images. The photographs, taken between 1959–1998, visually capture the planning and building of Shannon town and its surrounds, and provide unique insights into the life in Ireland in the latter half of the twentieth century.
These images, taken from the Shannon Development collection, show the modern flats built at Shannon in the early 1960s. The accompanying pamphlet, published by ESB in 1961, outlines all the modern conveniences in these ‘all-electric’ flats, including under-floor heating!
