Sustainability and archival storage

In order to preserve archival material for future generations, it must be stored in light, temperature and humidity controlled ‘strongrooms’. These rooms are equipped with features such as air conditioning, security alarms, water alarms and fire suppression systems. These systems are closely monitored to ensure the conditions remain within the acceptable range laid out by international standards, especially during extreme weather events, such as a heatwave. Naturally, these measures use electricity. This is another reason why appraisal of collections is important, so that we do not keep large quantities of material unnecessarily.

Today’s images show how rare books and archives are stored in UL Library for long-term preservation.
